BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team used dominating defense to post a 93-39 exhibition victory in the Lady Jackets season opener against North American University Friday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne held North American to just 19.4% shooting from the field while having a 52.5% shooting themselves, 50% (9 of 18) from behind the arc as a team.
With the Lady Jackets leading 43-22 at the half, HPU used its defense in the final two quarters to hold North American to just five field goals in the second half and 12 total for the game. The HPU defense also held North American to 3 of 27 (11.1%) shooting from behind the arc.
The Lady Jackets outscored North American 36-11 in the fourth quarter and 50-17 overall in the second half on their way to the 93-39 final.
HPU was led by
Mallory Garcia with 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the three-point line.
Salina Ali followed with 11 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
Lily Janek,
Amanda Turpin, and
Kayla Brigance each had 10 points.
Chelsey Harris finished with a game-high four assists.
North American was led by Makyla Patterson with 12 points followed by Kailee Valentine with 10 points.
