Marshall, Texas - The Howard Payne Baseball Club started off American Southwest Conference play with a 4-2 win over East Texas Baptist University.
ETBU started the scoring off in the 1st going up 1-0 on an HPU error. The Jackets would answer by scoring four in the 2nd. The first two runs were off of an error by the Tigers that brought home RJ Roberts and Rylee McGee, the third was a wild pitch which scored David Paleo and the fourth and final was an RBI single by Joey Villarreal that plated Cade Varrichio.
The Tigers would score again in the 6th, but the Jackets would head back to the hotel with a 4-2 victory. Â
RJ Roberts led the Jackets with three hits and Varrichio led the offense with two RBIs.
Xavier Haines started this contest and lasted 7 innings, giving up only five hits and one run while striking out four. Bryant Chambers tossed a scoreless inning giving up one hit and striking out one, then Kory Owen got his first save after he slammed the door shut in the 9th allowing only one hit while sitting down three batters.
The Jackets improve to 4-5, 1-0 in ASC play, and will be back on the field for a double header tomorrow starting at 1:00 pm. Live stats, video and audio can be found at HPUSports.com.
