Yellow Jackets Tangle With Cowboys

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team threw five interceptions fell 38-14 to Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Two Hardin-Simmons touchdowns in the first minute and fifteen seconds of the third quarter proved to be the huddle that Howard Payne could not overcome after only trailing 14-7 at the halftime break.

The start the third quarter, Hardin-Simmons ran back the opening kickoff and then picked off an HPU pass on the Jacket's next possession. Then the Cowboys scored on a 12-yard run just 1:15 into the start of the second half.

HPU's Landon McKinney was able to bring the Jackets to within two scores on a TD pass to Otis Lanier under a minute into the fourth quarter. Lanier's 19-yard TD reception made the score 28-14 HSU with 14:10 left in the game.

After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, the Yellow Jackets posted a 7-0 lead on a Jake Parker 3-yard TD run with 13:15 left in the second quarter.

McKinney finished 22 of 33 passing for 255 yards, one TD, and five interceptions. Tauren Bradley was HPU's leading rushing with 45 yards on 13 attempts.

Jake Parker led all receivers six catches for 109 yards and Otis Lanier added 10 receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown.

HPU's Kyle Bell led all tackles with 11, two solo. Brandon Rhea and Dai' Shawn Fisher each added eight tackles. Along with seven tackles, Carson Padilla had 1.5 sacks with Aaron Alderete assisting on one sack. Peyton Lowe had five tackles and a forced fumble.

Howard Payne is now 6-2 overall and 5-2 in American Southwest Conference action. Hardin-Simmons stands at 7-1 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Yellow Jackets will be at Mary Hardin-Baylor next Saturday in Belton, Texas for a 12:00 noon kickoff.
