GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team dropped a non-conference mid-week game 7-4 to Southwestern University Tuesday evening. HPU's Will Burford led going 3-for-4 with a homer.
Even though both teams finished with 11 hits in the game, the Yellow Jackets committing two fielding errors played a factor in the outcome for Howard Payne.
Down 5-0 going into the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets finally got on the board on a Will Burford two-run home run to left field. Then a
Derek Gifford double to right scored
RJ Roberts. To round out the four-run fifth for the Jackets,
Noah Coronado singled to right to plate Gifford to pull HPU to within one, 5-4.
Southwestern added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings in the 7-4 final.
Burford led HPU going 3-for-4 with two-RBI and the home run.

Derek Gifford, and
Carson Wert each finished 2-for-4 on the day. Roberts and Gifford recorded doubles.
Bryant Chambers got the loss in the start for HPU allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out four.
Jasen Hollingsworth went 2.2 in relief allowing two runs on four hits.
Dean Evans finished the final .1 inning.
The Yellow Jackets will finish the regular season this weekend at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas, It will be a single on Friday starting at 7:00 pm and a double-header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
