BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team jumped out to a 27-point halftime lead and cruised to a 35-11 conference victory over Austin College this Saturday in the HPU Homecoming game at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Yellow Jacket defense for the fifth time this season held their opponent to under 100 yards rushing allowing just 94 yards on the ground.

Along with a Javian Myles 3-yard TD run to get the Jackets on the scoreboard, HPU's Landon McKinney threw TD strikes to Gus Charles (26-yards), and Jordan Carroll (5-yards and 18-yards) to account for 28 points of the Jackets' first half scoring.

Jacket safety KJ Kelley picked off a Roo pass in the second quarter and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to round out HPU's 35-point first half.

McKinney was 34 of 53 passing for 385 yards and three touchdowns. Carroll was his top target with nine catches for 138 yards and two TDs. Charles followed with 10 catches for 119 and one TD.

Jessie Paris and Cade Rochinski led the Jacket defense with eight tackles each. The HPU defense also sacked Austin College five times in the game.

Howard Payne now stands at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference action. Austin College falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Yellow Jackets will be on the road next Saturday Oct. 21st at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
