Jackets Drop Tigers 28-14

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University defense held the East Texas Baptist University to just 54 yards rushing in an 28-14 Yellow Jackets victory Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Along with holding East Texas Baptist to just 54 yards rushing, the Howard Payne defense recorded two interception and recovered one fumble holding the Tiger offense to just two touchdowns.

The HPU offense gained a 20-0 halftime advantage after TD receptions from Jordan Carroll, Deon Collins, and Gus Charles (failed extra-point).

HPU safety KJ Kelley anchored the Jacket defense with a game-high nine tackles, two interceptions, and one pass breakup. Jessie Paris and Peyton Lowe both followed with eight tackles each.

HPU QB Landon McKinney was 22 of 33 passing for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Gus Charles was his top target with four catches for 136 yards and two TDs. Jordan Carroll had five catches for 77 yards and a TD and Sam Sims had four catches for 78 yards. Deon Collins added two catches for 44 yards and a TD.

HPU Punter Jackson Coulson had eight kicks for 304 yards, a 38.0 average, a long of 61 yards with three inside the 20-yard line.

Howard Payne is now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference action, while East Texas Baptist falls to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Yellow Jackets will be at home next week versus Austin College. It will be HPU's Homecoming game on Oct. 14th starting at 2:00 pm
