Big Plans, Big Inspiration: HPU Hosts Impactful Heartland Tip-Off Luncheon

Basketball and Community Take Center Stage at Howard Payne Luncheon

Howard Payne University Hosts Inspiring Heartland Tip-Off Luncheon, Celebrating Community, Vision, and the Future of HPU Athletics
Heartland Tip-off Luncheon
Howard Payne University hosted its inaugural Heartland Tip-Off Luncheon on campus Monday, bringing together coaches, administrators, community leaders, and supporters for a day centered on gratitude, momentum, and a shared vision for the future of both HPU and Brownwood.

The event opened with Athletic Director Adam Bright, who welcomed the crowd with heartfelt appreciation, introductions, and a prayer. Bright emphasized the deep connection between Howard Payne Athletics and the Brownwood community, noting that the success of one fuels the success of the other.

Women's Basketball Head Coach Rodney Gee took the podium first, offering both an update on his program and a message that echoed the theme of the day: community. Gee spoke of his excitement surrounding the direction of the team and his pride in being part of a campus and city united in purpose. He highlighted how the growth of HPU Athletics mirrors the growth of Brownwood itself.

Men's Basketball Head Coach Nadir Dalleh followed, sharing updates from what has already been a historic start for the Yellow Jacket men. After opening the season 5–0 — one of the best starts in program history — the team continues to roll at 6–2. Dalleh spoke passionately about not only the on-court success, but how it reflects the broader upward trajectory of Howard Payne Athletics. He voiced strong optimism about the future and the continued rise of HPU's athletic programs.

The luncheon then welcomed Robert Anders, Sports Coordinator for the City of Brownwood, who highlighted the city's commitment to supporting athletic growth and the economic and social impact that sports bring to the community. Anders pointed to the Brownwood Coliseum — home to several HPU sports — as an example of the city's investment, noting its role as a key venue that will host a portion of the 2026 Junior College Women's Basketball Tournament. With teams and fans expected from across the country, the event signals just one of many opportunities that sports bring to Brownwood.

In tandem with these developments, Howard Payne announced a $6 million renovation to its tennis and athletic facilities. The upgrades aim to position the university and city to host even more tournaments and high-profile events, further showcasing both HPU and Brownwood on a larger stage.

The keynote speaker — and guest of honor — was legendary coach Lonn Reisman, whose presence captivated the audience. Reisman, known for his role in helping transform NBA Hall-of-Famer Dennis Rodman during his time at Southeastern Oklahoma State, shared stories from his decorated career. He spoke about his bold decision in 1988 to take over Tarleton State, an NAIA program with just one winning season prior to his arrival. Despite colleagues urging him to turn down the job, Reisman accepted — and ultimately helped elevate Tarleton from NAIA to NCAA Division I. Following his coaching career, he served as Tarleton's Athletic Director and now leads as Mayor of Stephenville, continuing his lifelong passion for building "bigger and better" opportunities through sports.

Reisman praised Howard Payne's Christ-centered mission and expressed genuine admiration for the direction of the university and its athletic programs. His message of vision, faith, and perseverance left the audience inspired and energized.

As the luncheon concluded, one sentiment echoed throughout the room: gratitude for the past — and excitement for what's next. With strong leadership, growing community partnerships, and ambitious plans on the horizon, Howard Payne University stands poised for a bright and impactful future in athletics and beyond.
