LONGVIEW, Texas - The Howard Payne women's basketball team got career highs from
Yessenia Cazares and
Danyel Bradley in a 103-99 double overtime victory over conference opponent LeTourneau University Thursday evening.
LeTourneau's full court pressure caused problems for Howard Payne all game as Letu forced 30 HPU turnovers on the night. It was great play by HPU's
Yessenia Cazares and
Danyel Bradley that balanced out the HPU turnover problems. Cazares scored a career high 26 points sparked by 5 of 11 shooting from behind the three-point line.
Danyel Bradley also matched her career high scoring 35, shooting 5 of 11 from behind the arc.
LeTourneau would score six straight to close out the first half and lead 39-35 at the break.,Howard Payne then start the second half with a 19-3 run to pull away and open up a 54-42 advantage with 13:24 left in regulation.
With the Lady Jackets leading 75-66 with 16 seconds remaining, LeTourneau hit three consecutive three-pointers the last one coming at the buzzer to tie the game at 75-75 sending the game to overtime.
It will be tied at 90-90 after the first overtime. In the second overtime with four Lady Jackets fouling out of the game, Howard Payne would final be able to hold on for the 103-99 victory.
Bradley was 12 of 15 from the free-throw line and added four assists to her game high 35 points. Cazares scored her 26 points on 9 of 16 shooting off the bench. Kalin Hana finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Sarah Van Remmen had 14 points and a game high 16 rebounds.
Jessica Galaviz dished out a game high eight assists.
Letu was led by Ashley Reed was 26 points followed by Bria Goodman with 15 points. Rebecca Stewart had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Howard Payne outrebounded Letu 65-51 in the game.
Howard Payne is now 8-5 overall and 5-3 in American Southwest Conference action. LeTourneau stands at 3-11 overall and 1-8 in conference. Howard Payne will play next at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, Texas on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
