MARSHALL, Texas – The Howard Payne women's basketball would not be able to hold on to a 15 point second half lead and fell 84-82 at the buzzer to East Texas Baptist University Saturday afternoon in conference action.
A costly Howard Payne turnover with seconds remaining allowed East Texas Baptist to make a layup as time expired for the 84-82 win over the Lady Jackets. It was the first win for ETBU over HPU since December 1st of 2001 when ETBU won at home 69-65.
With the Lady Jackets leading 74-59 with 6:43 left in the game, East Texas Baptist puts together a 14-0 run to pull within one, 74-73 with 4:10 left.,Later,
Jada Evans of Howard Payne would hit a layup with 1:14 remaining to give the Lady Jackets a two point advantage 81-79.

After a
Sarah Van Remmen free-throw, East Texas Baptist converted on a three-point play to tie the game at 82-82 with :21 seconds left. On the next possession, a HPU turnover by
Yessenia Cazares with three seconds remaining would lead to a layup for ETBU at the buzzer for the 84-82 upset.

HPU was led by
Danyel Bradley with 28 points followed by
Jada Evans' career high 19 points. Cazares scored 12 off the bench on 4 of 8 shooting from behind the arc. HPU did win the turnover battle committing 10 while forcing 16 from ETBU.

Amanda Rucker led ETBU with a game high 30 points followed by April Leonard and Amber Carter with 17 points each. ETBU shot 50% from the field for the game and held HPU to just 36% shooting in the second half.

Howard Payne is now 8-6 overall and 5-4 in conference, ETBU stands at 7-8 overall and 3-7 in league play. The Lady Jackets will play next on January 22nd at Concordia Texas.
