Jackets Split With Eagles

BROWNWOOD, Texas – After a delay for weather this past weekend, the Howard Payne baseball team split a conference double header 1-6 and 5-2 with the University of the Ozarks Monday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Howard Payne only managed four hits while allowing nine hits with one error in a 6-1 loss in game one of the double header.

After Ozarks scored one in the top of the first, the Jackets answered in to bottom of the second when Walker Dailey doubled down the left line to score Dustin DeJohn, who had reached on a single to right center.

Ozarks extended its lead with three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh on the way to the 6-1 win.

Shae Edmonds recorded three strikeouts giving up six runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work. Dustin Kelver allowed one hit the rest of the way out.

In game two, the Jackets scored two in the third and would never trail from then posting a 5-2 victory to split the double header.

Garrett reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to score Micah Thompson. Later Brett Quackenbush walked with the bases loaded to plate Garrett for the second run of the inning.

Howard Payne added another score in the fifth when Quackenbush hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score John Elmore.

Ozarks would score two runs in the top of the seventh but Howard Payne responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Matthew Daniel hit a two-run homerun to left field to make the score 5-2 Jackets.

Daniel was 3-for-5 from the plate in game two with 2 RBIs. Walker Dailey was 2-for-4 and Quackenbush had two RBIs.

Matthew Parks got the win in the start going 6.1 innings giving up just one run on two hits, Parks struckout seven. Kyle Ramon threw the final 2.2 inning and recorded the save striking out three.

Howard Payne is now 4-3 overall and 3-2 in American Southwest Conference action. Ozarks stands at 4-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. The Jackets will have a non-conference double header at home with Arlington Baptist College on Tuesday starting at 1:00 pm
