Jackets Drop DH to Tornados

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team dropped a conference double header to Concordia University Texas 5-3 and 20-1 Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Fielding errors plagued Howard Payne throughout the series with the Jackets committing two in each game of the double header.

Down 4-0 in game one, the Yellow Jackets scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull within one, 4-3. In the 5th, Joshua Gerig singled to score David Groves and in the sixth Benjamin Lewis singled to left field to bring home Brett Quackenbush and Noah Payne.

Concordia scored one in the top of the seventh and secured the win 5-3.

Kyle Ramon went the distance in the loss for HPU allowing five runs on nine hits and striking out seven. Benjamin Lewis led the Jackets at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

In game two of the double header it was all Concordia with the Tornados jumping out to a 13-1 advantage after three innings.

Howard Payne got its only run of the game in the bottom of the third when Joshua Gerig's fielder's choice allowed Michael Nowak to score.

Nathan Weyrauch (0-1) recorded the loss in the start going 1.2 innings. Joshua O'Conner, Wesley Smith, Preston Newman, Xavier Haines, Brendon Clanton and Zach Moseley all saw time in relief for Howard Payne.

Howard Payne is now 14-10 overall and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference play, Concordia stands at 18-11 overall and 10-5 in league action. The Jackets will play next on April 7-8 at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.
