Brownwood, Texas: A damp morning led to a long day of baseball that end with a Yellow Jacket walk off to beat ASC foe Mary-Hardin Baylor by a score of 11-10.
After the Cru got out to an early 1-0 lead in the 1
st, the Jackets answered back with a 2 spot of their own on a
Noah Payne triple followed by a
Joshua Gerig single.
UMHB retook the lead in the 2
nd by putting up 3 runs, but HPU tied it on another
Noah Payne three bagger that scored himself on an error, along with
Cliff Lunceford.
It was almost all Cru after that. UMHB took the lead back in the 3
rd with 3 runs and then added 2 more in the 5
th.
The Jackets weren't done yet, though.
After finding themselves trying to chip away, HPU was down 10-7 going into the bottom of the 9
th.
Ty McCain led the inning off with a walk followed by an
RJ Roberts double that scored pinch runner
Seth Heupel making the score 10-8.
David Groves then got a pinch hit opportunity that led to an RBI single, scoring pinch runner
Shawn Butler. Now it's 10-9.
Jacob Salazar singled and moved pinch runner,
Cade Varrichio, over to 3
rd.
Kyle Figueroa then laid down a good bunt that was fielded by the 1
st baseman, but a high toss pulled the catcher away from the plate allowing Varrichio to slide in safely. Tie ball game.
Cliff Lunceford came up with runners on 1
st and 2
nd. He hit to the 3
rd baseman but a pump faked to first, in an attempt to get the runner at 3
rd, left everyone safe. Bases loaded for one of the hottest hitters in the American Southwest Conference,
Noah Payne.
Payne didn't waste any time, driving the first pitch of the at bat over the shortstop safely into left center for a walk off single that scored pinch runner
Noah Coronado.
Noah Payne led the Jackets at the plate going 3-5 with a walk and 2 RBIs.
Joshua Gerig also added a 2-4 day with 2 RBIs and
RJ Roberts was 2 for 5 with 2 of his own RBIs.
Chandler Clark got the nod for the Jackets in this match up and tossed 2.1 innings giving up 6 runs, 5 earned while striking out 2.
Ben Schardt and
Xavier Haines turned in 2.1 innings combined allowing no runs or hits, and Korey Owen grabbed the win giving up only 1 hit in his inning of work improving to 2-1 on the season.
The Jackets draw even at 7-7, 4-0 in the ASC during their 5 game win streak. UMHB dropped to 3-7, 0-1 in ASC play. The weekend series will wrap up tomorrow with the 1
