BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team dominated the glass in a 63-55 non-conference game with McMurry University Thursday evening in the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Lady Jackets out rebounded the War Hawks 56-43 in the game while blocking six McMurry shots as a team. HPU's
Kayla Brigance the defensive effort with a game high 10 rebounds and four blocks along with nine points.
It was a defensive battle all game with each team holding the other to 31% shooting from the field and forcing over 20 turnovers on each side.
With the Lady Jackets leading 27-23 at the half, the game would remaining a six-point ball battle throughout the second half. Howard Payne posted a 20-point fourth quarter to secure the 63-55 victory for the Lady Jackets.
Amanda Turpin led HPU in scoring with 18 points followed by
Chelsey Harris with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Bria Neal and
Delaney Ingram each grabbed nine rebounds.
McMurry was led by Destiny Matthews with 17 points and 10 rebounds followed by Aubrey Guerra with 14 points.
Howard Payne improves to 3-3 overall and McMurry falls to 0-7 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play next on Saturday at home versus East Texas Baptist University in a 1:00 pm conference matchup.
