BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team dropped a conference matchup with East Texas Baptist University 87-51 Saturday afternoon in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Tyrell Thompson led the Howard Payne team with 14 points on 7 of 17 shooting while adding a team high seven rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets could not recover from a cold first half shooting 26.9% from the field to trail 43-19 at the break. HPU posted 32 points in the second half but it was not enough in the 87-51 ETBU final.
The Jackets did hold the Tigers to 19.0% (4 of 21) three-point shooting but only managed to connect on 14.3% (3 of 21) on three-point attempts themselves.
Following Thompson's 14 points was
Michael House with eight points.
Jaylan Ballou and
James Helzer each had three steals and Ballou added three assists.
ETBU was led by Kevin Charles with 20 points and six rebounds. Jayden Williams added 11 points.
Howard Payne will play next on Thursday, Jan. 28th at UT Dallas, it will be a 6:30 pm conference start time. The Jackets will then travel to the University of the Ozarks on Saturday for a 3:00 pm conference matchup.
