BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University athletic department today announced that the 1992, 1993, and 1994 Yellow Jacket baseball teams will be recognized as the 2024 HPU Alumni Sports Teams of the Year. The 1992, 1993, and 1994 HPU baseball teams will be recognized at HPU's 2024 Sports Alumni Weekend, tentatively set for every third weekend in May.
The 2024 HPU Sports Hall of Fame inductees, Damon Wilson and Kristy Lyons, will also be formally inducted at the event and the recognition of the HPU Sports Alumni of the Year and Coach of the Year.
The 1992 baseball team
As the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) champion, the team went 39-23 overall, and 2-2 at the NAIA District 8 Tournament hosted by Dallas Baptist University.
Howard Payne was the #4 seed, defeating (#5 seed) College of the Southwest 6-3 and (#1 seed) Lubbock Christian 7-6. HPU would fall to (#2 seed) Dallas Baptist 3-13 and (#3 seed) Tarleton State 7-14.
Post-season awards included 1992 All-District 8 Baseball Team members David White – OF – Sr., Beck Wells – C – Jr.

The 1993 baseball team
Gaining the 1993 TIAA Championship, the Yellow Jackets finished the 1993 season at 37-20 overall, and appeared for the second straight year at the NAIA District 8 Tournament hosted by Tarleton State University.
Post-season awards included 1993 All-District 8 Baseball Team members Damon Treadway – UTL, and Beck Wells – C. Wells would also be named an All-American.

The 1994 baseball team
Finishing with the program's third consecutive TIAA Championship, HPU posted a 22-26 overall record, and the team went 1-2 at the NAIA District 8 Tournament hosted by Hardin-Simmons. The Yellow Jackets defeated host HSU in the first round 7-2.
Post-season awards included 1994 All-District 8 Baseball Team members Shawn Hughes, and Greg Burnet. All-TIAA members Rudy Ramos – P, Todd Brantley – P, Travis McMain – P, Pepper Wells – UTL, James Bybee – OF, Jeff Turner – OF, Michael Ornelaz – SS, Shawn Hughes – C, and TIAA MVP Greg Burnet. Todd Howey would be named the TIAA Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.
The team set a school record for playing in 40 consecutive games without being shut out.
