Jackets Drop Conference Opener To Cowboys

ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team led at the break but went on to drop its conference opener 40-33 to Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets totaled 100 more yards of total offense and five more first downs than the Cowboys in the game. HPU had 470 total yards (360 passing, 110 rushing) while Hardin-Simmons ended the game with 371 total yards (203 rushing, 168 passing).

Down 14-0 to start the game, the Yellow Jackets rallied to hold a 17-14 advantage at the half. Jackets had TD passes to Deon Collins and Jordan Carroll along with a 24-yard field goal from Rider Davila to hold the halftime lead.

Hardin-Simmons scored 20 points in the third quarter but again the Jackets pulled the Cowboys back in pulling to within one, 34-33 after a Javian Myles 36-yard TD run (Jackets missed two-point conversion).

Down 40-33 with two minutes remaining, The Jackets threw their only interception of the game to secure the 40-33 HSU final.

HPU QB Landon McKinney was 25 of 50 passing for 360 yards and three touchdowns. Gus Charles was his top receiver with six catches for 172 yards and one 70-yard TD reception. Jordan Carroll Had four catches for 51 yards and a TD and Deon Collins followed with six catches for 48 yards and a TD.

Javian Miles was the Jackets' leading rushing with 12 carries for 75 yards and one TD.

HPU's KJ Kelley lead all tacklers with 13 (8 solo), Jacob Korrodi and Jessie Paris followed with 10 tackles each, and Korrodi also picked off one pass. KD Bookman recorded two pass breakups.

Rider Davila connected on field goals from 24 yards and 33 yards. Davila also was 3 for 3 on extra-point attempts.

Howard Payne is now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference action. Hardin-Simmons stands at 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Yellow Jackets will be back at home next Saturday, Oct 7th versus East Texas Baptist at 1:00 pm.
