KERRVILLE, Texas - Howard Payne University's
Brett Quackenbush records six hits in the Yellow Jackets double header split,10-2 and 5-8, with Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
HPU's
Brett Quackenbush went 6-for-9 at the plate with three RBIs on the day. Quackenbush led a Howard Payne offense that recorded 21 hits, while the Jacket defense and pitching staff limited Schreiner to just 11 hits in the two games.
In game one, the Jackets jumped out to an early lead scoring five in the first and one in the second. After Schreiner scored single runs in the third and fourth, the Jackets put Schreiner away scoring four in the sixth on their way to the 10-2 final.
Seth Owen recorded his first win as a Jackets going 4.0 innings in the start allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three.
Xavier Haines went the final three frames of the seven inning game allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Along with Quackenbush's three hits,
Joshua Gerig,
Noah Payne and
David Groves each had two hits.
Game two of the double header would turn out much closer. The Jackets again out hit the Mountaineers in the game 11-7 but six HPU fielding errors led to an 8-5 Schreiner decision.
HPU held a 4-1 lead after a four-run top of the second. A
Justin Anderson sac fly plated
Benjamin Lewis, then a
Noah Payne triple to right field scored two and finally a Quackenbush single brought home Payne to round out the second inning scoring for Jackets.
Schreiner then would score seven over the next six innings before the Jackets would plate one run in the ninth.
Blake Null scored on a wild pitch from third to make the score 8-5 Schreiner.
Chad Anders went 3.0 innings in the start allowing four runs on four hits and striking out three,
Chandler Clark got the loss in relief going 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out three.
Wesley Smith went the final two frames allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
Quackenbush again recorded thee hits followed by
Noah Payne and
Jay Holland with two hits each. Payne finished the double headed 4-for-9 at the plate.
Howard Payne is now 1-2 to start the season, Schreiner stands at 3-3 overall. The Jackets will play next weekend on the road in a non-conference four game series at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.
