BROWNWOOD, Texas - Using 10 different pitchers, the Howard Payne University baseball team held Central Christian College to just one run in 4-0 and 5-1 double-header wins Tuesday at Don Shepard Park.
Game One
The Yellow Jackets jumped on the Tigers early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jacob Salazar doubled down the line to score
Noah Payne. Then
JW Ledbetter singled to right field to plate
Jacob Salazar and
Blake Laney.
Howard Payne add an insurance run in the fifth when
Benjamin Lewis singled through the left side to bring home
Noah Payne, 4-0 HPU.
Five different Jackets recorded hits and
JW Ledbetter finished with two RBI.
Chandler Clark went 3.0 innings in the no-decision start allowing four hits, no runs and striking out three.
John Killough recorded his first win of the season in relief allowing just one hit in one inning of action.
Jacob Ford,
Wesley Smith and
Brenden Clanton each saw an inning of relief. Ford allow just one hit, Smith Clanton each allowed none.
Game Two
The Jackets again jumped out to an early lead scoring three in the bottom of the first. A
Jacob Rodriguez triple to left center plated
Jacob Salazar,
Hunter Bazan and
David Groves.
Howard Payne added singles runs in the third and fourth to lead 5-0. Central Christian scored its only run in the top of the seventh for the 5-1 final.
Jacob Rodriguez went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI.
David Groves and
Benjamin Lewis both each finished 2-for-3 in the game.
Graham White went 3.0 innings in the no-decision start for Howard Payne allowing three hits and striking out three.
Kory Owen recorded the win in relief not allowing a hit and striking out three in one inning of work.
Vernon Hart threw one inning striking out two,
Seth Brody struckout three in one inning of action and
Ethan Cerna allowed one run on one hit and struckout one in the final frame of the game.
Howard Payne is now 13-6 overall and Central Christian stands at 4-29 on the year. The Jackets will be in action this weekend on the road at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, Texas.
