Box Score 2 Tyler, Texas – The Jackets took one of two games on Saturday afternoon, dropping a rubber match in game one 2-0 and winning game two 9-6 against the Patriots of the University of Texas at Tyler.
Game One
The first game of the afternoon went scoreless until the 6th inning when UT Tyler hit a two run single to score the only runs of the contest.
Multiple Jackets had a single hit in this game, but just could not scrape a run across.
Bryson Lyro got the start for the Jackets going 5.2 giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 1.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader fell in Howard Payne's favor thanks to some power by the middle of the order.
HPU struck in the 1st as Noah Payne found a way to cross the plate putting the Jackets up 1-0.
Tyler tied the game in the 2nd but in the 3rd, Ty McCain dropped a bomb for a grand slam, making it 5-1 in the Jackets favor.
McCain kept up the scoring ways as he singled for an RBI in the 5th to bring home Jacob Rodriguez.
Tyler fought within one run as the score was 6-5 going into the 7th, but RJ Roberts decided to hit a blast over the left field wall to add some distance. Then Jacob Salazar put the game away in the 9th with a double down the left field line making the final 9-6.
Ty McCain led the Jackets at the plate going 3 for 4 with a home run and 5 RBIs. Jacob Rodriguez also had 3 hits and RJ Roberts added 2 RBIs.
Preston Newman got the start on the mound tossing 4.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 2 runs while striking out 1. Kyle Purdes grabbed the win battling for 1 inning and giving up 3 runs, 1 earned. Brenden Clanton then slammed the door in the 9th to grab his 5th save of the season.
The Jackets improved to 22-14 on the season, staying at 14-4 in the ASC. Howard Payne will be at home Tuesday afternoon as they host the Pirates of Southwestern. The first pitch will at 2:00 pm.
