HPU Athletics Hall of Fame
Adam King was one of the most dominant quarterbacks in NCAA Division III while at Howard Payne. A 2000 graduate of River Road High School in Amarillo, King was a redshirt for his first year at HPU. He then became starting quarterback and was named the 2001 American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year with a conference record 3,177 yards passing. In his senior year in 2004, King led the nation with 3,680 yards of total offense, another ASC record. HPU would finish the 2004 season with the third best passing offense in the nation, averaging 340 yards per game. King threw for over 300 yards in a game 14 times. His career high of 512 yards passing came against East Texas Baptist University in 2004. King had over 10,000 yards passing in his career, the most in ASC history. He also had 11,588 yards of total offense for third on the all-time NCAA Division III list at the time. His 10,250 passing yards ranked as eighth best all time in NCAA Division III and also at the time he was the NCAA Division III football all-time leader in total yardage. King also holds records for the most plays in an ASC game with 83, career plays with 1,796, career highest percentage of passes completed at .592, most pass attempts at 1,306 and total passes completed at 786.
