Jerry Miller of Guthrie was an Honorable Mention All-America linebacker, and he also participated in track, baseball, and basketball for the Yellow Jackets. A versatile football player, he also played wide receiver and defensive end. After graduating in 1961, the former Yellow Jackets captain was drafted by the AFL’s Houston Oilers but went on to sign with the Denver Broncos. A knee injury cut his pro career short and he went into coaching, becoming the all-time winningest coach of six-man football in the nation with 277 victories in more than a dozen school districts in small towns in Texas. His teams won 12 district championships, 12 bi-district championships, six regional championships and four state semifinals. He was inducted into the Texas Six-Man Football Association Hall of Fame in 2009. Among other honors, Miller, who died in 2017, received the Amarillo Sports Achievement Award and was inducted into the Panhandle Football Hall of Fame.
