Damon Wilson came to Howard Payne University in 1988 from Mesquite as a basketball player and went on to start, play and coach the HPU men’s club volleyball program. After serving as women's assistant volleyball coach, he took over the program and guided the team to three consecutive conference championships. Wilson was named American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year three times. He also was named NAIA Southwest Region Coach of the Year once. In the fall of 1997, Wilson took over the volleyball program at Tarleton State University, leading the Texans to their first non-losing season since 1991. In four years at Tarleton, he recruited two freshmen of the year players and a conference preseason most valuable player. Wilson then moved to the high school ranks as head coaching at Crandall High School, Rockwall High School and Jesuit College Preparatory in Dallas. He earned four Coach of the Year honors, coached teams to four district championships and reached his 500th career coaching victory in 2017.
