Robert Moore was a standout basketball player from Brownwood High who became a prolific scorer for Howard Payne. He held both scoring and free throw records from 1956 until 1966 and was known for free throw accuracy. He had the single season free throw record, hitting 222 of 291 attempts and for his career was 547 of 749. He was a three-time all-conference selection. Moore, who served in the U.S. Navy before coming to Howard Payne, played basketball only three years because of knee injuries. After graduation in 1958, he moved to Grandfalls in 1959 to coach and teach. He was named Howard Payne’s Alumni Coach of the Year in 1972 and 1974. Moore, who died in 2001, is one of five pairs of brothers in the HPU Athletics Hall of Fame, joining his brother Herman Moore.
