HPU Athletics Hall of Fame
Al Wilson became the first student trainer at Howard Payne when he enrolled as a freshman in 1957. During his college years, he worked with HPU's student athletes and served as the trainer for the annual Greenbelt Bowl in Childress. Following his graduation in 1961, he was named athletic trainer at Killeen, becoming the first full-time high school athletic trainer in Central Texas and only one of five in Texas. In 1998, Killeen High School dedicated its Letterman's Walk in his honor. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame and the Southwest Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame. In 1976, he was appointed by Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe to the State License Board of Athletic Trainers. He served as chair of that board from 1977-1986. He was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association. In all, he spent more than 57 years as athletic trainer at Killeen High School.
