Melanie Mayer was a three-time All-American and in 2007 was named to the Lone Star Conference’s Top 75 men and women basketball players for the conference’s 75th anniversary. The 1983 graduate of Port Aransas High School is the all-time leading scorer for HPU with 2,173 points. She also holds HPU records for most career field goals with 851 and most career rebounds with 980. She was All-Lone Star Conference all four years of her career, on the LSC All-Academic team and led the nation in scoring her sophomore season. She earned the Fighting Jacket Sportsmanship Award and was twice named Athlete of the Year at HPU. After graduation, Mayer coached the Port Aransas High School Lady Marlins for 14 years. During that time, the Lady Marlins won 120 district games and lost three (in Class 1A and 2A), qualified for the regional tournament 10 times and the state tournament in 1995. Her overall coaching record at Port Aransas high school was 347-100, and her career record as a head coach was 363-113. Mayer also taught high school and college English for over 30 years, winning several outstanding teacher awards. She is the author of numerous articles and three books. Her humorous and inspirational keynotes and teacher training are popular across Texas.
