During his senior year in 1950, Howard Payne defeated Southwest Conference foe SMU by one point. He also coached at Howard Payne in 1968 but is best known as a rancher. Herman produced commercial herds of Angora goats, fine-wool ewes and crossbred lambs in Brown, Comanche, and Mills counties. He was a member of the Mohair Council of America. He served three terms as its president and helped build foreign markets, making trips to 31 countries.
