HPU Athletics Hall of Fame
Stanley Owen played three sports at Howard Payne – football, basketball and track. Owen was a 1955 graduate of Burkburnett High School, where he was all-state basketball in his senior year and had a four-year high school record of 2,053 points. He also is a member of the Burkburnett ISD Sports Hall of Fame. At Howard Payne, Owen still holds school records for most free-throw attempts – 27– and free throws made – 24 – in a game against McMurry in 1956. After attending Howard Payne, he played for the semi-professional basketball team Pete Grace Drillers and Holt Sporting Goods fast-pitch softball team, pitching five no-hitters and two perfect games plus an appearance in the 1976 World Fast-Pitch Tournament. After graduation, Owen was a longtime basketball coach and then principal at Burkburnett High. Along with his older brother Dan Owen, Stanley Owen is one of five pairs of brothers in the Howard Payne Athletics Hall of Fame.
