HPU Athletics Hall of Fame
Henry Gonzales is one of Howard Payne’s most accomplished tennis players. He lost just one conference tennis match in four years, compiling a 57-1 record in the American Southwest Conference. Gonzales was the American Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1996, ASC West Division Player of the Year in 1999 and First Team All-ASC in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. He also was a two-time national championship qualifier in singles and doubles. While compiling a 31-3 record in his senior year, Gonzales received Howard Payne’s Paul J. Cunningham Memorial Award in 1999. He also won the award in 1998. The award, voted on by the HPU athletic administration staff, is given to the male athlete who represents the highest qualities of a student athlete. Gonzales, from Odessa, was voted MVP in his district for three years in high school. He has worked for Gleneagles Country Club in Plano since 2000 where he is director of tennis.
