Dobie Craig of El Campo was a standout forward on basketball teams coached by Glen Whitis, one of the winningest coaches in HPU history. The Yellow Jackets finished with a 19-5 record and Lone Star Conference co-championship his senior year. Craig also was a sprinter on Cap Shelton's track team as a senior. After graduation in 1962, the Oakland Raiders of the AFL signed Craig to play wide receiver and halfback. He was named the Raiders' Rookie of the Year and was part of a 93-yard touchdown play featured during the opening credits of ABC’s "Wide World of Sports." After two years in Oakland, Craig was traded to the Houston Oilers for one year before returning to El Campo. After playing pro football, Craig worked in the oil field and ended his career as a consultant. He died in 2008.
