HPU Athletics Hall of Fame
Terry Lee Davis of Austin was the anchor of one of the best men’s basketball teams in Howard Payne history. He played center on the last HPU team to play in the NAIA Division I National Tournament in 1975. Davis earned the nickname of “The Helicopter” around the Lone Star Conference. Davis was a tenacious defender, strong rebounder and prolific shot blocker. He started for three consecutive seasons and finished his career with the all-time school record for most blocked shots in a season and a career. Davis’s 105 blocked shots in 1976 is a record that still stands. As a senior, Davis received honorable mention on the All-Lone Star Conference Team. He was a mainstay on that team, which was the LSC regular-season champion and played in the NAIA District IV playoffs and the AAU National Tournament. Davis died in a tragic [1] incident in 1989. Terry’s younger brother, Marshall Davis, also is in the HPU Athletics Hall of Fame. The brothers are one of five pairs of brothers in the hall of fame.
