Waymon Woodrow Wilson of Pharr was a three-sport star in football, basketball and track and field. In track, he set a Texas Conference record in the 880-yard run and was part of conference record-setting 440-yard and half-mile relays. The first time he ran a mile in competition, in 1938, he missed the Texas Conference record by two seconds. Wilson was an All-Texas Conference guard in basketball in 1938 and a halfback on the football team. He was voted Howard Payne’s Most Athletic as a senior. After graduation in 1940, he taught math and coached at Stephenville, Ballinger, Dallas Pleasant Grove and Dallas Samuell. He then became an athletic director, principal and district administrator in the Dallas ISD, retiring in 1976. He volunteered with the Texas Baptist Men, building churches across Texas. He died in 2014 at the age of 99.
