Charlie Marshall White of Hermleigh earned all-district honors in football, basketball and track at Hobbs High School in Rotan. In 1948 he won the state high hurdles championship and was the Class B high point earner in track. At Howard Payne, White played offensive and defensive back on the Yellow Jacket football team and returned punts and kickoffs. In track, he excelled in the high and low hurdles, ran on the sprint and mile relay team, and competed in the pole vault. The most memorable events in his athletic career include a punt return of 72 yards that helped defeat Southwest Texas State 6-3, winning and tying the Texas Conference low hurdle record, earning high point man honors in the Texas Conference track meet, and winning the NAIA national low hurdles championship with his career best. After graduation in 1952, he taught and coached at Hermleigh and New Deal and moved into administration in Plainview and Lubbock. He served as superintendent in O’Donnell, Petersburg and Dimmitt. He then worked in Garland ISD until his retirement in 1990. He died in 2014.
