Jerry Millsapps of Lamesa lettered three years at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets and was named to the all-Texas Conference team three times. He also was a part of Howard Payne’s 1954 Texas Conference championship team. Millsapps spent his freshman year at Texas Tech before transferring to Howard Payne. Two weeks before graduation, he was notified to report to the U.S. Army and eventually assigned to the Artillery Fire Direction Center in Kitzingen, Germany. While in Germany, he played football for the U.S. Military League in Europe. After his service, Millsapps started his coaching career at San Angelo Lee Junior High. Coaching stints at Lampasas and Howard Payne followed. In 1967, he moved to Pecos, where his teams won two district championships and appeared in one state semi-final game. He coached Texas all-stars against Oklahoma all-stars in the Oil Bowl. Millsapps also served on the board of directors of the Texas High School Coaches Association. In 1979, he became head coach at Odessa High School. He then became athletic director and head football coach at Howard Payne and also started the Howard Payne Athletics Hall of Fame. Millsapps’ last post before retirement was athletic director of El Paso ISD, serving there until his retirement. He died in 2022.
