Brownwood native Hayden Fields was Texas Conference champion in the 100-yard dash in 1951 and 1952 and champion in the 220-yard dash in 1950, 1951 and 1952 as a member of legendary track coach J.H. “Cap” Shelton’s teams. Fields was a member of Howard Payne’s Texas Conference champion sprint teams from 1949-52, winning 100- and 220-yard dash events throughout Texas. He also was a member of the 440- and 880-yard sprint relay teams that won titles at the Texas Relays, Kansas Relays and Drake Relays. He coached at Brady Junior High before moving to Salinas, Calif., where he operated a family dry cleaning business. He also joined the National Guard after graduating from Howard Payne and retired as California National Guard Brigadier General. He died in 2003.
