Bob Derryberry compiled the best winning percentage for a coach in Howard Payne history. His teams went 107-44 for a .709 winning percentage from 1974-79. His 107 coaching wins also place him third all-time on the men’s basketball coaching wins list for the Yellow Jackets. His teams never had a losing season in all his years of coaching – a total of 799 games at the high school, junior college and university levels. His high school teams won numerous district championships and played in many regional and state tournaments. His college teams won conference titles and earned invitations to the national tournament. At HPU, his team won the Lone Star Conference tournament in 1976 and appeared in the NAIA National Tournament that year. Derryberry played basketball at Graford High School, Decatur Baptist College and Pan American University (now University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), where he was team captain and All-Conference his junior and senior years. After leaving Howard Payne, he coached at Sam Houston State, Southwest Texas State and the University of Houston before his retirement in 1995. After retirement, he became a cattle rancher and died in 2022. Derryberry also is a member of the Pan American University Sports Hall of Fame and was also honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Pan American.
