Tami Pattillo was a standout basketball guard in Odessa and immediately had an impact at Howard Payne, winning Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year in 1987. She was honorable mention All-TIAA as a sophomore, First Team All-TIAA as a junior and voted Most Valuable Player as a senior in 1990, leading the Yellow Jackets to the TIAA championship. She is second all-time in three HPU women’s basketball statistics: career three-point percentage (.413); most assists in a career (390) and most assists in a season (164). After graduation, she earned a master’s degree at Tarleton State and taught at Brownwood High School before moving to Bridgeport, where she coached basketball and softball. Pattillo and her father, former HPU men’s basketball coach Charles Pattillo, are the only father and daughter in the HPU Athletics Hall of Fame. Pattillo died in 1994. The Tami Pattillo Memorial Award is given each year to an HPU female athlete who best represents the HPU spirit. A scholarship is also named in her honor.
