Roland E. “Slim” Warren of Fort Stockton lettered in basketball, football and track. In 1941, he was All-Texas Conference in basketball and halfback in football. He was the leading scorer in the conference in both sports. Warren scored 60 points in football and 429 in only 12 games in basketball – the most points by a college basketball player in Texas that year. He also was the conference’s leading scorer in basketball in 1939 and 1940. He was named third team All-Little American. After graduation in 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Glider Corps in World War II. Warren returned to Texas and coached in Roscoe, Ranger, Irving and Cleburne. At Brownwood High School, he was athletic director, head basketball coach and football coach. He led Brownwood High to its first and only appearance in the Texas high school state championship game in 1949. As head football coach, he led Brownwood to its first district championship in 1953. He later became Brownwood High principal, retiring in 1981. The Brownwood High gymnasium bears his name. He died in 1987.
