William Joseph “B.J.” Korenek came to Howard Payne in 1960 after graduating from La Vega High School. Korenek played running back, quarterback, defensive back, kicker and punter for the Yellow Jackets. He was a four-year starter and as a senior in 1963, he was named co-captain and led the Lone Star Conference in punting. He was named to The Dallas Morning News’ All-Texas Conference First Team and All-LSC First Team. After graduation, he coached under Gordon Wood in Brownwood from 1965-1968. Later, he held head coaching positions at Yorktown, West, Clifton, Hillsboro, and Axtell high schools. He also coached at West Middle School, Hubbard High School and Penelope High School. Korenek was a recipient of the district coach of the year award in 1980, 1985, 1987, and 1993. In addition, he received Centex coach of the year awards in 1980 and 1985. Korenek lived in West until his death in 2022.
