Arnett Weeks of Lawn attended Howard Payne just one year before leaving school to enlist in the Navy in 1943 during World War II. He earned a Presidential Unit Citation and three bronze stars as well as the Naval Commendation. He participated in three invasions in the Pacific — Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima. He survived the sinking of his ship at Iwo Jima. In the fall of 1946, Weeks returned to Howard Payne. Playing offensive and defensive tackle, he was a two-year starter and was named Second Team All-Texas Conference in 1947. He went on to coach and teach in high schools in Texas at Grandview, Beaumont French, Granbury, Rosebud, Jim Ned, Anson, and Bangs. He also served as athletic director, and football and track coach at Cisco Junior College. While there, Weeks was instrumental in Cisco becoming the first Texas school of higher education to achieve integration by recruiting black athletes. He was named National Junior College Coach of the Year in 1957. Weeks finished his career at Bangs ISD, serving as superintendent and girls track coach. After retiring, he was a volunteer track coach and helped with basketball stats at Howard Payne. The endowed Arnett and Patsy Weeks Scholarship for physical education majors bears his name. Before his death in 2009, he served on the Bangs ISD board of trustees for 11 years and as the mayor of Bangs for one year.
