Melvin “Moose” Borchert of Lockhart was a three-year letterman in football and a member of Howard Payne’s 1941 Texas Conference championship team that didn’t give up a point on defense. He was a two-time All-Conference selection at tackle and second-team All-American. As a senior, he was also on the track team and placed second in discus and third in shot put in the 1943 Texas Conference meet. Borchert had the opportunity to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, but turned them down twice – once to join the Army and the second to raise a family. He coached football and track in Hallettsville, Comanche and Rockport before settling in Yoakum. He coached there for 17 years before moving into administration as junior high and high school principal. He died in 1995.
