David Noble of Odessa was a member of Lone Star Conference track and field championship teams in 1961 and 1962 and later took over as Howard Payne track coach after the death of legendary coach J.H. “Cap” Shelton. Noble was captain of the track team his senior year, running on Howard Payne’s famed two-mile relay with Glenn Petty, Frank Santiago and Doug Reid. He coached for nine years at a Waco Junior High and McKinney High School before coming to Howard Payne as track coach in 1968. After the 1971 season, Noble moved to Angelo State, serving over two decades as the men's track coach and another six seasons as coach of the women's track team. While at Angelo State, Noble coached athletes to more than 150 All-America performances and coached six Academic All-Americans. He guided the Rams to 17 Top 10 national finishes and the Rambelles to six-straight top 20 national finishes. Noble had eight LSC championship teams during his career and was an eight-time LSC Coach of the Year. In 1988, he was honored as the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year. The annual Angelo State track meet bears his name. Noble was inducted into the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor in 2004 and the Texas Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2017.
