Melvin E. “Wency” White transferred to Howard Payne after one year at Hardin-Simmons. While at Howard Payne he was an outstanding player in football, basketball and golf. The Coleman native was a three-year starter in football as a running back and receiver. White scored numerous touchdowns and was co-captain his senior year in 1953. In basketball, he was a four-year starter, leading the team in scoring one year. He was an All-Texas Conference player in 1952 and 1954. In 1954 he helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the Texas Conference championship. On the golf course, White was a key player on the 1954 runner-up Texas Conference team. White was drafted into the Army during the Korean War soon after graduation. He served in the U.S. and Germany for two years. Upon his return, White received a master’s degree in education from Southwest Texas State University. He worked as a coach and an elementary school principal in Shiner before moving to Sabinal. White was a teacher, football and basketball coach in Sabinal for over 30 years. He also served as elementary school principal for a few years and as Sabinal High School principal for 20 years. He died in 2010.
