Mike Martin of Richardson played offensive tackle and coached for a year at Howard Payne under James Cameron, one of the school's most successful football coaches. He was a graduate assistant on the 1971 Howard Payne team that was Co-Lone Star Conference Champion and won the Cowboy Bowl. Martin graduated in 1971 and went to work in 1972 at Angelo State after Cameron took over that program. He remained as an assistant coach through ASU’s 2004 season, ending his Angelo State career as defensive coordinator. Throughout his coaching tenure, his defenses were consistently ranked among the top in the Lone Star Conference and multiple times among the best nationally in NCAA Division II. He was defensive coordinator when Angelo State won the 1978 NAIA National Championship. Martin became the first Angelo State assistant coach inducted into that school’s Hall of Honor in 2012 and still lives in San Angelo.
