In track, he won two Texas Conference high jump titles and finished in second and third place the other two years. After graduation in 1954, he was the head basketball coach at Lipan and Stephenville high schools. In the five years he coached basketball, his teams won more than 75% of their games, earning two district championships and three second-place finishes. He earned a master’s in education from Howard Payne in 1958 and left coaching in 1960 for a counseling fellowship at the University of Texas, eventually earning a Ph.D. from UT. In 1967, Miller joined the graduate faculty at Southwest Texas State University, teaching graduate courses in counseling and psychotherapy, conducting research and publishing papers. Upon his retirement, Southwest Texas honored him with the title of Professor Emeritus in Counseling. He died in 2017.
