David Jones of Stanton was an outstanding three-sport star at Stanton. He continued his athletic achievements at Howard Payne, where he was a four-year letterman in basketball, a two-year letterman in football and on the track team. The 6-foot-3 forward was captain of the basketball team as a senior in 1973-74 and earned honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference. He was named the team’s best defensive player in 1973. In football, he earned All-Lone Star Conference honors as a defensive back. The Detroit Lions drafted him as a defensive back in the 14th round, 351st overall, in the 1974 NFL Draft.
