Dale Byerly graduated from Coleman High School in 1958 as valedictorian, an All-State quarterback, All-Region in basketball and state champion in the mile run for three consecutive years. He continued those athletic and academic exploits at Howard Payne, enrolling in the fall of 1958. He was a four-year starter at quarterback and led the Lone Star Conference in total yards. He earned Second Team All-LSC and was Honorable Mention Little All-American. Byerly also excelled off the field. He was a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society and was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. After graduating from Howard Payne in 1962, he coached at Brownwood and Quanah high schools. He then went to work with the American Cancer Society in Texas before becoming the Assistant Director of the Heart Association of Texas. He later became state director of the Indiana Heart Association. He now lives in Dayton, Tenn.
