Charles Pattillo was a successful coach at both high school and collegiate levels. In just over 15 seasons as HPU's head men's basketball coach, Pattillo was 180-204. The 1965 graduate of Howard Payne has 582 wins overall in his high school and college coaching career. His high school teams won 12 district championships with four regional tournament appearances. He coached 15 all-state players and had eight district coach of the year honors. During the mid-1990s, Pattillo's Yellow Jackets won three straight conference championships – the 1994-95 Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship, 1995-96 TIAA co-championship and the 1996-97 American Southwest Conference tri-championship. Each of those teams earned appearances in the NAIA National Tournament each of those seasons. In 2005-2006, the Jackets went 20-7 and won the ASC’s West Division. That year, HPU hosted an ASC tournament for the first time in school history, and Pattillo was named the ASC West Division Coach of the Year. He coached more than 25 all-conference players and three All-Americans. He also earned four coach of the year awards on the collegiate level (three TIAA and one ASC). Pattillo’s daughter, the late Tami Pattillo, is also in the HPU Athletics Hall of Fame and has a scholarship named in her memory.
