Stovall began his newspaper career while a student at Howard Payne. He was named the Brownwood Bulletin’s sports editor following his graduation from HPU in 1960 and was with the paper until his death in 1997. A longtime supporter of Howard Payne’s athletic teams, Stovall earned Lone Star Conference Sportswriter of the Year honors for his coverage of the Yellow Jackets and the LSC. He received the Sportswriter of the Year Award in 1977 and 1990 from the Texas High School Coaches Association and was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 1990. Stovall was known for his “Points After” columns.
